Here’s some more reading material for you (thanks to illuminated and I Rule the School):
“I think it’s just as autobiographical. I mean, Hissing Fauna was like pain. And pain is the great equalizer. Everyone can appreciate pain, confusion, anxiety… these things are universal and easily relatable. But when you talk about more abstract things… Skeletal Lamping is definitely more abstract. I don’t think it’s less emotional or less autobiographical.”

“I’m always sort of experimenting with arrangements and song structure but, on this one, I wanted to take it even further. Most people just take a section or a verse and repeat it, for no real reason other than that’s what you do: you repeat the verse, you repeat the chorus, you might change the lyrics slightly here. There’s just so much laziness. And I wanted to be as creative as possible, to fill every second with new inspiration.”

“I know people don’t want this record, really – I can tell by most of the reviews,” he said. “Everyone seems so befuddled. Some people are actually pissed off.”
Wait, what…?
Why would anybody be pissed off/befuddled by such a beautiful thing? Obviously you guys should just keep doing what you’re doing (not that you weren’t already). If people are angered by it they can just channel their rage into a pillow or something and be done with it.

I can’t tell you how GOOD this album made me feel, as have the last couple. The knowledge that other people out there have such relatable experiences, and deal with them in such similar ways to myself was a total relief. It’s strange that as soon as a group goes off the tracks of what’s the ‘norm’ of their type of music people start to flip shit. You’re heading in a direction that I hope more pop musicians will head, one that I can truly enjoy.
To those critics and fans getting worked up over change,
keep this in mind
“Any reviewer who expresses rage and loathing for a piece of art is preposterous. He or she is like a person who has put on full armor and attacked a hot fudge sundae.” — Kurt Vonnegut

I agree, i was compleatly euphoric for about 2 weeks after this album came out! It is definately a strange album but i think that only makes me like it more, i really don’t understand how anyone could be pissed off about this beautiful work of art.
